looking south from Ward Hill |
Out of all the islands I've been to, Fair Isle is the most remote, with a thrice weekly stomach turning ferry journey to get there, it's own weather (usually a large bank of fog) and only the faintest glimpse of distant rocky outliers on an otherwise continual oceanic horizon. Shetland mainland and Foula are jaqggedy specks to the north and on a clear night, fron high ground, you can just catch the Light of North Ronaldsay, the most northerly of the Orkney archipelago. Everywhere you look, you are surrounded by sea, unless you are face down in a ditch (and it has been known.....)
